You'll give your Kenwood in-dash mobile video system a potent extra dimension when you connect the KNA-G510 navigation system. You'll drive with confidence as it guides you to your destination efficiently and accurately. The system can even keep you up to date on what's happening with traffic flow along your programmed route. You control the navigation functions with your Kenwood DVD player's touchscreen controls. To choose a destination, just enter a specific street address or intersection, or choose one of the five million points of interest, like hotels, restaurants, and much more. You'll see the preloaded road maps of the U.S. and Canada on your DVD player's video screen, as they show you where you are and where you're going. Voice prompts delivered over your car speakers also help out, telling you whenever a turn is coming up.You can customize your route options, in case there are roads you'd like to avoid, and enter intermediate points of interest that you'd like to visit along the way. If you miss a turn, the system will recalculate your route quickly. A trip computer gives you handy data about your average speed, distance traveled, and more. Garmin, a satellite navigation pioneer, provides the built-in road maps that feature impressive detail, 2-D and 3-D views, and extensive points of interest. The KNA-G510 also includes a SmartDigital (SD) slot, which you can use to upload new maps as they become available. The KNA-G510 also offers compatibility with two different traffic-information services: Clear Channel's Traffic Message Channel (TMC) and XM Satellite Radio's Traffic and Weather service. With either, you'll receive updates on accidents, construction, and other traffic incidents, giving you plenty of time to avoid them ? particularly handy if you have a long work commute. The XM service also gives you the option of subscribing to XM Satellite Radio for some of the best radio entertainment around. Each system requires an extra component (available soon) and a subscription.

Both work together flawlessly. I'm a big fan of Garmin and have several of their portable units and when I found out I could fully integrate Garmin maps with my Kenwood head unit, this was a winning combination. Just like other Gramin units, it's intuitive and pack full of features. I also purchased the Garmin GXM30 tuner which connected to the KNA-G510 via a mini usb plug and subscribed to the XM traffic / radio. All worked (again) seamlessly. This is a well rounded combination. I almost purchased the Kenwood DNX8120, which is the same as the DDX812 but with build in Garmin Navigation, it was $200 more. My only complaint is that the map was a year old and Garmin would not honer a free map update.

The hardest part is finding a good place for the GPS antenna. More on the strengths: The Garmin interface is well known in GPS. Its menus are simple to follow and make sense. You do have to play around with the settings and volume, but once everything is tweaked, it works well. Additionally, I was able to upgrade the unit's software (excluding its MAPS) with ease, via SD card.More on the weaknesses: My map software is a version behind the current set. I am supposed to be able to upgrade this for free (according to the Garmin website), however both the website instructions and manual are confusing. I am supposed to have received some map unlock code, but I have yet to actually find that number.Additionally, some other in-dash NAV units have something like 11M POI. This unit has 5M or 6M. It would be nice to have more of these as it helps a great deal when you don't know the exact address of what you are looking for.
