The wood arms are flat and have slats vertical on the sides under the arms. The back has a solid section in the center with leather on it and open sections on the sides. After about 2 months several of the sections came loose and I had to screw joints back tight. I also discoverd that one of the chair arms completely split into two pieces. I called the manufacturer and did get another arm to replace the broken one, but it broke two weeks later. Now both arms are broken and the chair is falling apart. I now plan on throwing this piece of junk in a dumpster. What a waste of money!
